Channelling Daylight
Design Windows worked their magic on the Wanaka Catholic Church project. This won Design Windows the Commercial Under $100,000 Award in the Window Association of New Zealand’s Design Flair Awards, held in June 2011. “This outstanding architectural designed Catholic Church will be an outstanding landmark for the Wanaka community for many years to come,” says John Hancock from Design Windows Cromwell. “Built adjacent to the newly built Catholic School this building will have an ever lasting flair in Architecture.”

The Wanaka Catholic Church project won against two other National finalists in the WANZ Awards. “Medieval Catholic churches used darkness to create religious mystery. This church is quite the opposite,” said the judges. “Curving clerestory windows flood the body of the church with light, while more contemplative spaces on either side have end windows in the form of a cross set deep externally in a coursed rubble wall. Minimal joinery either side of the sacristy enable a view of the mountains beyond.”

Design Windows Cromwell was also a National finalist in the Over $50,000 category for their Coburn House project in Queenstown, and a National finalist in the Residential $15,000 - $50,000 category for their Hancock Residence project in Alexandra.
Design Windows collaborated well with the architects on the project. “The liaison between the fabricator and architect throughout the design and construction process made for a beautifully finished install which accentuates and adds to the finished church,” said Sarah Scott Architects.

As a member of the Window Association of New Zealand, all the windows and doors supplied by Design Windows are independently type tested to comply with the relevant New Zealand performance Standards and New Zealand Building Code requirements.
